tracking crystals also require having spent some time around the target youre tracking (usually a minimum of 4 hours, 2 hrs for smaller/cheaper ones)!

the cheaper versions have short ranges, whereas a tracking crystal's range is limited by time and not distance (it's good for a year once used) and can't be blocked or tricked by spells and concealments where the cheaper ones can! The arrow on top grows bigger/brighter or smaller/dimmer depending on how far away the target is in relation to the crystal as well. So that's why it's 60 gold.

Cheaper versions, called creatively "tracking shards", can be bought for a couple of silver. All of them can be used to track things other than people as long as the intended target has mana in it somehow (which, yes, includes certain kinds of objects).
